The Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado, whose dramatic black-and-white photographs of the Amazon introduced the rainforest to the world, has died. He was 81. 'It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sebastiao Salgado, our founder, mentor, and eternal source of inspiration,' his nonprofit Instituto Terra announced. The French Academy of Fine Arts, of which Salgado was a member, described him as a 'great witness to the human condition and the state of the planet'.
